By analyzing user data and feedback, these intelligent systems can adapt and change scenes in real time based on viewer preferences. “If there’s one lesson we’ve learned from the failure to adequately regulate social media it’s that the designers of these products will put monetization over the well-being of society and kids,” Golin says. For those who prefer visual stimulation, AI porn bots offer a unique twist on traditional adult images. But he says that ultimately new regulation is needed to contain AI’s hazards. Josh Golin, executive director of FairPlay, an advocacy organization that supports legislation to protect young people, such as the Kids Online Safety Act, says Common Sense’s new ratings are a welcome new resource for parents. “If a kid is generating images of doctors and criminals, and the AI is exaggerating biases and portraying stereotypes as they do, that’s going to influence kids a lot more than it would adults,” she says. Kidd is most concerned about the long-term effects of image-generating AI like Dall-E 2. It suggests AI could be shaping children’s worldviews without their parents’ knowledge. She says the results of a poll conducted by Common Sense and released in May that found most parents are unaware that their kids use ChatGPT are concerning. Talking to your kid about how AI like ChatGPT works and its limitations should help, says Celeste Kidd, who directs an AI research lab at UC Berkeley. She has tried to build trust by talking with her daughter about what she sees on Snapchat and TikTok but says she knows little about how artificial intelligence works, and she welcomes new resources. Susan Mongrain-Nock, a mother of two in San Diego, knows her 15-year-old daughter Lily uses Snapchat and has concerns about her seeing harmful content. President Joe Biden’s executive order on AI issued last month requires the secretary of education to issue guidance on the use of the technology in education within the next year. The nonprofit plans to carry out thousands of AI reviews in the coming months and years.Ĭommon Sense Media released its ratings and reviews shortly after state attorneys generals filed suit against Meta alleging that it endangers kids and at a time when parents and teachers are just beginning to consider the role of generative AI in education. “I think we all suffer when democracy is eroded, but young people are the biggest losers, because they’re going to inherit the political system and democracy that we have,” Common Sense CEO Jim Steyer says. Their report warns that Stable Diffusion poses “unfathomable” risk to children and concludes that image generators have the power to “erode trust to the point where democracy or civic institutions are unable to function.” When Dall-E 2 is asked to generate photorealistic imagery of wealthy people of color it creates cartoons, low-quality images, or imagery associated with poverty, Common Sense’s reviewers found. A statement provided by Maggie Cherneff on behalf of Snapchat’s owner Snap said the chatbot is an optional tool designed with safety and privacy in mind and that parents can see if and when teens use it in the app’s Family Center. The Washington Post previously reported similar results to Common Sense when testing Snapchat’s My AI earlier this year. Common Sense concludes there are “more downsides to My AI than benefits.” My AI received one of the lowest scores among the 10 systems covered in Common Sense’s report, which warns that the chatbot is willing to chat with teen users about sex and alcohol and that it misrepresented Snap’s targeted advertising. Today it launched its first analysis and ratings for AI tools, including OpenAI's ChatGPT and Snapchat’s My AI chatbot. Common Sense Media, the nonprofit that rates movies and other media for parents, is trying to help families adapt to the age of AI. Parenting in 2023 requires talking with your kids not just about the hazards of the internet and social media but also the artificial intelligence spreading rapidly into just about every app or online service.

They told Dagen they would review the decision and decide what to do next. The religious community is disappointed by the decision of the Ministry of Children and Families. The Jehovah's Witnesses appealed this ruling in March, claiming that other courts worldwide have regularly ruled that the exclusionary practice is a legal, religious procedure that "is protected by the freedom of religion and freedom of assembly." The fact that unbaptised children are exposed to social isolation can be seen as negative social control, the State Administrator wrote in January, according to Vart Land. The State also feared that children are at risk of social isolation. The State Administrator argued that this practice violates the Religious Society Act, as earlier reported by CNE.news. When a member of the Jehovah's Witnesses decides to step out or loses his or her faith, the Jehovah's Witnesses socially exclude him or her. The reason for this grant withdrawal was the community's exclusionary practices, Dagen writes. In January, the State Administrator of Norway denied the community of Jehovah's Witnesses subsidies for 2021, which amounted to 16 million NOK (approximately 1.5 million euros). The decision is now final and cannot be appealed. My money would have gambled the Euro would make gains against the US dollar in the months ahead. Now it’s time to determine the overall timeline of this project calendar. Depending on your shoot, this could be your director or could be your 1st AD, Line Producer, or Unit Production Manager. After all, they’re in charge of the set.īut this is more about who’s in charge of keeping logistical track of the set. Some of the more general tasks we’ve put into our Gantt chart Excel template, like “principal photography”, might not have an obvious person to make their owner. The casting director is in charge of casting, while the location scout is in charge of locations. If you’re making this as a Google Sheets Gantt chart, you’ll also want to share the document with them.įor some of these, it will be relatively easy. This is the person who is in charge of the task. Now, since this is a team calendar, you’ll want to assign an owner to each task or department. It’s easy to add new lines when you need them. Gantt charts let you see how changing one thing affects everything else.ĭon’t worry about having forgotten something. The unfortunate truth is that in any project, you will have to delay deadlines and add extra time for unexpected circumstances. This is especially true when you start using dependencies with our free Excel Gantt chart template. They give you an intuitive understanding of how everything fits together. Gantt charts are project management spreadsheets that specialize in a visual view. Holistic is generally defined as understanding that everything is connected. Thirdly, although by no means finally, Gantt charts are holistic. Good luck getting that kind of information out of any other project planning template. Rather than just see that you have a three-week Pre-Production scheduled, you can quickly see that that three-week Pre-Production is composed of two weeks of casting, two weeks of costume fitting, one week of location scouting, and one week of set design.Īll layered on top of each other, of course. Gantt charts break a project down into distinct phases and tasks. The second is that they’re project planning templates, not just simple schedules. What step will take the longest, which will be done relatively quickly.Īttempting this same sort of high-level view would be almost impossible on a traditional calendar, which is focused on the given day. You can look at any example Gantt chart, even without dates, and quickly see the basic layout of the project. The first is that they’re visual project calendars. Advantages of Gantt chartsĬompared to traditional project calendars or schedules, Gantt charts offer a few distinct advantages as project planning templates. A Google Docs Gantt Chart was just a few mouse clicks away. Now it could be shared and viewed collaboratively, a true team calendar. The dawn of the Internet age of the 90’s and the 2000’s brought Gantt charts even further. Learning how to make a Gantt chart in Excel wasn’t far behind. Rather than having to draw a new Gantt chart each time, a new project management spreadsheet could be easily copied as needed. The personal computer revolution of the 1980’s brought Gantt charts to the forefront in a big way. Other example Gantt chart efforts include the Hoover Dam and the Federal Interstate system. When other project planning systems weren’t up to the job, Gantt charts were used during WWI to track the manufacture of arms for the war effort. You can’t have a really productive table read until you have all your cast finalized, after all.Ī similar project calendar system called a harmonogram was designed in the 1890’s by a Polish engineer named Karol Adamiecki, but it wasn’t published until the 1930’s. The table read is dependent upon casting being finished. However, casting and the table read are dependencies. You don’t need to have the film cast to start checking out potential locations. You also need to get started on location scouting, and you’d like to have a table reading before you go any further.Ĭasting and location scouting are independent of each other. You’ve got casting scheduled for the second week of June. Let’s say that you’ve started the pre-production process. Here’s a Gantt chart example from the film production world. You can even break your project planning template by which stage of production you’re in:Īnother major feature of Gantt charts, including our free Excel Gantt chart template, is their ability to display “dependencies”.Ī dependency is simply a marker that one event cannot begin until another one has been completed. For the purposes of production, it can be broken up by department or major tasks. The bar begins when the task begins and ends when the task is due to end. It’s fine if you just need rough estimates for simple projects, but isn’t really full-featured enough for film and video production.Įach task has a bar associated with it. It turns out that Lily and James Potter had a cat. It was mentioned in the Half-Blood Prince book prior to the Battle of the Astronomy Tower. The Cat That Was Owned By Madam RosmertaĪnother one from the series is Madam Rosmerta’s cat. This is the cat that Hermione turned into when she accidentally used its hair for the Polyjuice Potion. The Cat That Was Owned By Millicent BulstrodeĪnother cat from the series is the one that was owned by Millicent Bulstrode, who is a Slytherin Student. Fuzzclawįuzzclaw is the cat of Rowan Khanna, who is from the Hogwarts Mystery video game. Mr Tibbles, Snowy, and Tufty are the names of the three cats that were owned by Arabella Figg. She was also the first victim of the basilisk that was living in the Chamber of Secrets. Along with Crookshanks, she is one of the best-known felines from the series. Mrs Norris is the pet cat that was owned by Argus Filch, who worked as the Hogwart’s caretaker. He is definitely one of the most well-known felines from the entire series and made multiple appearances in the books and movies. Her description reads: “black outfit: stylish and sharp with a hint of red near the shoulders - and echoing an SS uniform.” Forget for a moment that black military uniforms are not uncommon even in democracy loving USA and Britain, and that the splash of red on the arm is the badge of their office rather than a symbol of political ideology. To start with the uniforms, Villanueva is simply seeing what she wants to see. My issue is based around the idea that this kind of sentiment leads to unfair critique of anime, both as a storytelling medium and a product of a different culture. What I have a problem with is the knee-jerk tendency to impart personal ideology and cultural beliefs on a work that wasn’t created for a Western audience in the first place. Sieg heil?īefore I go on, it should be understood that I don’t really care if Villanueva dislikes ACCA or any other anime, nor am I judging whatever reason leads her to come to that decision. These turn out to even more superficial, as does her examination of artistic intent and audience values as it relates to anime. But then she goes on to posit that Nazi themes and/or imagery are all over the place in anime, and spends the rest of her article detailing various examples. She ponders why she felt this way for a couple of brief sentences, and if the reaction is normal. uniforms and that of SS officers in Nazi Germany offended her to the point of dropping the series. Villanueva explains the similarity between the Inspection Dept. This seemingly superficial reason has a little more depth to it than that, but only a little. She explains that she couldn’t finish it, citing the reason as the style of the uniform Jean and the other inspectors wear. The article’s author (Michelle Villanueva) prefaces it by recalling her experience in trying out ACCA: 13-Territory Inspection Dept., the slow burning political intrigue/conspiracy anime from Madhouse in Winter 2017 based on Natsume Ono’s manga of the same name. With that out of the way, the reason I’m writing about this is because of an article I read on titled “The troubling relationship between anime and fascism”. The level of “troubling” is entirely up to your interpretation. At most the topic of this post is a personal annoyance of mine, but it may have some real significance to the way people watch and think about anime. The use of the word “trouble” in my title is pure hyperbole and meant to poke fun at the article I mentioned in the intro. The “Western” culture I’m most familiar with is that of the Unites States (because I live there), so that is the perspective I’ll mostly discuss. “Western” refers to pretty much everything outside of Japan, but specifically societies that have a strong leaning against cultures which espouse non-democratic ideals or discourage “modern” social norms. Greater exposure means greater diversity in the values and opinions of viewership, and a greater chance that something will be taken the wrong way.īefore I get too far into this post, I should define some of the terms and clarify my intent: This has led to an explosive growth of anime fandom, but is a double edged sword in many ways as well. Nearly every country with an established media industry can offer its residents access to a wide variety of anime, not to mention the numerous international broadcasting and marketing services that expose these Japanese creations to a far reaching audience. It is undeniable that anime has worldwide reach and appeal today. A recent article from attempts to highlight a tendency for anime to idealize fascism, but ultimately proves itself an example of Western viewpoints getting in the way of reasonable critique of anime. This lack of empathy stems from his narcissistic tendencies, believing that the world revolves around him and his needs. He views women as objects to manipulate for his entertainment and fails to see them as human beings with their feelings and emotions. Throughout the book, the narrator’s self-centeredness is evident. He’s obsessed with pop culture and sees himself as a main character in a movie.Īt the end, the guy references a classic story called “Dante’s Divine Comedy”, where the main character goes from Hell to Heaven. He’s very self-centered, thinks the world revolves around him, and may exaggerate stuff. But here’s the thing: we can’t really trust everything he says. The story is told by this guy looking back at his past actions after being hurt by Aisling. He’s writing this book to get back at her. The book ends with her embarrassing him at a bar while she takes photos of it. He thinks she’s just using him for her art project, where she takes photos of sad things. Still, he thinks she wants him to move to New York. They sleep together, and he falls hard for her, but she doesn’t seem that into him. On a work trip to New York, he meets a younger girl named Aisling. He moves to Minnesota, buys a house, but realizes he hates his job and the people there. But he got bored, cheated on her, and drank a lot. He even tells us about a woman he dated, named Penelope, who he thinks he loved. He enjoys messing with women’s feelings for fun.Īt the start of the book, he talks about how he enjoys hurting women emotionally. The main character in the story is a guy from Ireland living in London, who works in advertising. The third part is all about his confusing relationship with Aisling. The second part talks about his drinking problem, how he stops, and then moves to Minnesota. The first part introduces us to the guy and shows his bad side. The book is all made up (I personally feel so), even though the writer tries to make us believe it might be true. “Diary of an Oxygen Thief” is a book written by someone who doesn’t tell us their name. The swift response from the Mojang developers underscores the importance of community engagement in Minecraft.īy the way, 1.20.4 even fixed the heart on the side of the pot. Notably, this process could result in the loss of items, with inconsistent drops observed in some instances. The reproduction steps involved entering survival mode, placing a decorated pot, inserting items into the pot, leaving and reopening the world, and finally breaking the pot with a sword. In the bug report, Misode outlined the steps to reproduce the issue in version 1.20.3. The user Misode played a crucial role in bringing this bug to the attention of the Minecraft Trails and Tales developers. The bug was reported on Mojang's Official Issue Tracker and promptly addressed due to its severity. This was no ordinary glitch because it had the potential to disrupt your in-game life in offline and online worlds. Keep in mind that this texture pack does not update as frequently as Minecraft, so there might be periods of time where the update lags and there are some missing textures in the game. The highlight of the Minecraft 1.20.4 update is the resolution of a critical bug identified as MC-267185. The mobs have also been reskinned to appear like the many robot companions that are found in the game. It is thanks to the detailed work of the development team that we can see this amazing redesign and fresh concept in Minecraft while also holding some level of quality. This is easily the best version of the crossover that real gaming fans have been searching for all this time. There are a handful of resource packs that have been made in an attempt to replicate the feeling of the game in Minecraft, but many have fallen short. One of the benefits of choosing the Precisely Portal resource pack is that there was a team of several developers that worked side by side in order to make this extremely detailed new version of Minecraft. To get the Portal gun, you will have to add the recommended Portal gun mod for the game. Think of a more convenient version of Enderpearls. The portal gun even works as it is meant to and will open a portal for easy use. The Precisely Portal resource pack has certainly included the famed Portal Gun to the game in order to make for the most realistic crossover experience. The key item here that you have been waiting on is the Portal gun. Aside from the modern and clean textures that are reminiscent of Portal 1 and Portal 2, there are a host of new textures for items and even some original items. You will find that there are outstanding textures and new details in this pack that you might never get to experience otherwise. Some of those get really good development, while others are just showing off a connection between the two universes with very little attention to detail. There are many game crossovers within the resource pack world. The Precisely Portal resource pack reinvents the basic Minecraft playing experience by adding elements and features of the beloved Portal series. This is a timeless crossover between two titans in the gaming industry: Minecraft and Portal from Valve (Steam). These two countries have adopted a staggered, multi-pronged approach to CCUS deployment. The report talks about the global effort to use CCUS as a tool and talks about lessons India can learn from the UK and China. The stored CO 2 is effectively isolated from the atmosphere, mitigating its impact on climate change.Ī policy brief published by the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER) provides insights into the process and importance of CCS in reducing CO 2 emissions. CCS involves capturing CO 2 emitted from specific sources, transporting it to predetermined locations, and storing it securely. Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) focuses on preventing the release of CO 2 into the atmosphere. Captured carbon can also be converted into fuels such as methane, methanol, aviation, and gasoline.Īdditionally, it can be used to create construction materials, chemicals, plastics, and products derived from algae, such as fertilisers and animal feed. Oil India Limited (OIL) is yet to decide on its net zero goal.ĭirector General of Gujarat Energy Research and Management Institute (GERMI), Biswajit Roy, said that it is a well-understood fact that oil and coal will stay in India, but these companies are serious about their emissions and taking several measures to deal with them to cut down further emissions, he said.ĬCU, which stands for Carbon Capture and Utilisation, involves recycling captured carbon to produce economically valuable products or services. HPCL, BPCL, and GAIL have set the deadline to achieve net zero by 2040. ONGC targetting net zero by 2050, IOCL plans to achieve it by 2046. The majority of these companies have set targets to achieve zero emissions through renewable energy, such as solar, wind, biofuel, green hydrogen as well as CCUS technologies. The Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL) has also implemented a pilot project for fixing CO 2 using microalgae, which will convert inorganic carbon into organic compounds, in an artificial pond at its Pata petrochemical complex in Uttar Pradesh. CCUS technology is also part of the transition strategies of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), which aims to implement new CCUS technology by 2026 in its refinery, and of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL), which plans to install a carbon capture unit in Visakh refinery in Andhra Pradesh by December 2023. The project will capture CO 2 emissions at the refinery that will be transported through pipelines to the Gandhar oil field, owned by ONGC, where, as per media reports, carbon will be stored.Īs part of IOCL’s net-zero strategy, it aims at mitigating more than 40 per cent of its emissions through carbon-negative technologies such as CCUS and tree plantation. ONGC, in partnership with the Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL), another public sector oil producer, is also working on India’s first industrial-scale carbon capture project at the Koyali refinery. India’s Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), a government-owned oil and gas explorer and producer, recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Norway-based energy company Equinor to explore opportunities in low-carbon and renewable sectors, specifically focusing on CCUS. The captured CO 2 is either used onsite or compressed and transported to be used in a range of applications, or injected into geological formations which trap the CO 2 for permanent storage. Public sector oil and gas companies in India are actively embracing emission-reduction strategies such as Carbon Capture, Utilisation, and Storage (CCUS) as India targets net zero by 2070.ĬCUS is a common strategy across India’s oil and gas majors, as revealed in an April 2023, report, The Green Shift – The low carbon transition of India’s oil and gas sector, released by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG), which highlights the energy transition plans of domestic public sector oil and gas companies.ĬCUS technologies capture carbon dioxide from large point sources, such as power generation or industrial facilities that use either fossil fuels or biomass for fuel. |
